ÚLTIMAESPERANZA is an experimental art collective founded in 2004 in the Chilean Antarctic Territory (Punta Arenas – Puerto Natales). It is directed by the artists Sandra Ulloa and Nataniel Alvarez. In every one of its projects the collective invites one or more artists coming from different disciplinary backgrounds to explore concepts such as identity and memory. The collective has been working for two years now on the “HIDROPOÉTICA” project, exploring rivers and glaciers of the region. ÚLTIMAESPERANZA has exhibited in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, the United States, Spain, and Germany. On various occasions, it has been the recipient of the Fondart bursary. ÚLTIMAESPERANZA was invited twice to join the Consejo de la Cultura’s Proyecto Sur residency programme in Puerto Williams, Chile. It was also selected for the Culturia residency programme in Berlin, Germany. From 2009 to 2011, ÚLTIMAESPERANZA collaborated on a series of video dance works and transmedia experiences. Currently, the collective is also developing a project called “Espacio LIQUEN”, a series of artistic residencies and travelling workshops fostering projects of contemporary creation that promote the relation between science and the arts using technology as a means of exploration and expression. Since 2013 ÚLTIMAESPERANZA is also in charge of the international arts and new media meeting LUMEN.
